What is Extended Pseudo Trunk (XPT)?

What is eXtended Pseudo Trunk (XPT) And How Does It eXpand Capacity?

Extended Pseudo Trunk (XPT) is a patented Hytera technology that enhances pseudo trunking. This innovative system interconnects multiple Hytera DMR Tier II repeaters, enabling field radios to access a collection of available channels at an XPT repeater site, optimizing the use of all repeater channels.

Example:

Consider a radio system with five Talk Groups: G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5.

If there are two repeaters, each with two voice channels (slots), the Talk Groups are programmed as follows:

  • G1, G2, G3 – use Repeater 1
  • G4, G5 – use Repeater 2

In a conventional system, if G1 and G2 are using Repeater 1 and G3 tries to connect, G3 will receive a busy signal, even if Repeater 2 is available.

XPT mode eliminates this issue by allowing G3 to automatically switch to Repeater 2 without user intervention. All calls are efficiently managed with no busy signals.

Benefits of XPT:

No Tier III Trunking License Required:

XPT uses beacons to distribute system information, eliminating the need for a Dedicated Control Channel (FB8 FCC license). Existing FB2 or FB6 licenses suffice.

No need for additional FB8 licenses for backup Control Channels, as required in Tier III trunking systems.

Increased Site Resources:

Without a Control Channel, all channels are available for voice traffic, maximizing site resources.

Expanded Capacity:

An XPT site can support up to 16 voice channels and 16 data channels, accommodating up to 1,200 radios, significantly more than conventional systems.

Multi-Site Coverage:

XPT systems can scale from 2 to 16 sites with built-in roaming. If site connections are lost, systems revert to single-site mode and reconnect automatically when restored.

Simple Migration:

XPT is a licensable feature that upgrades existing Hytera repeaters to XPT, saving on infrastructure costs and increasing system capacity with minimal reprogramming.

Standard DMR Calling Features:

XPT supports Group Call, Private Call, Emergency Call, All Call, Priority Calls, Text Messaging, GPS, and Dedicated Data Channels.
